What is PEEK material?
Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is an engineering plastic. As an excellent wear-resistant and friction-reducing material, PEEK offers superior load-bearing and wear-resistant properties compared to polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). It is suitable for unlubricated, heavy-duty, low-speed, and complex environments, and is expected to replace traditional metal materials in the future.
PEEK not only possesses high-temperature resistance but also excellent mechanical strength and dimensional stability, wear resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, electrical properties, environmental friendliness, and hydrolysis resistance. It has applications in aerospace, automotive manufacturing, electronics, electrical engineering, medical and energy power, machinery, and automotive coatings.
PEEK manufacturing technology
PEEK CNC machining
PEEK is one of the most common and mature high-end engineering plastics used in CNC machining. It has good dimensional stability, is not easily deformed, and maintains excellent machining accuracy, making it suitable for machining high-precision plastic parts. Examples include bushings, sealing rings, gears, valve cores, and medical components made of PEEK, all of which are CNC machined.
PEEK Injection Molding
PEEK is a thermoplastic, ideally suited for injection molding. It can flow, be injected, and cool to set when heated to 360–420°C.
PEEK injection molding is a high-temperature process, requiring mold temperatures of 150–180°C and high-temperature resistant equipment. For high-volume production of PEEK parts with moderate precision requirements, injection molding is a suitable option. Examples include large-volume production of gears, bushings, valve seats, connectors, and medical accessories.
PEEK 3D printing
PEEK is the most mature and commonly used high-temperature, high-performance plastic, suitable for 3D printing. However, it cannot be printed using ordinary FDM printing technology and requires a high-temperature resistant industrial 3D printer. The nozzle temperature needs to be greater than 380℃, and the printing environment needs to be 120–180℃. It is suitable for PEEK parts with complex structures and internal flow channels, such as those used in medical implants and lightweight, small-batch aerospace parts.
Excellent properties of PEEK materials
High temperature resistance
- PEEK material melting point:343℃
- Long-term operating temperature: 260℃
- It can work for a long time in high temperature and steam environment.
Excellent mechanical properties (high strength, high rigidity)
- Tensile strength: Approximately 90 MPa
- Flexural modulus: 3.6 GPa
- It has good impact toughness, is not brittle, and is not easily cracked.
- With the addition of glass fiber/carbon fiber, the strength approaches that of aluminum alloy.
Good wear resistance and self-lubrication
- Extremely low coefficient of friction
- Excellent wear resistance and fatigue resistance
- PEEK is suitable for gears, bearings, bushings, sliders, and seals.
Extremely strong chemical corrosion resistance
- Resistant to strong acids, strong alkalis, oils, solvents, and fuels
- Except for strong oxidizing acids, it is almost uncorroded by any common chemicals.
- Ideal for oil and gas, chemical, valve, and pump applications
Biocompatibility (medical grade)
- PEEK material is non-toxic and non-irritating.
- Can withstand high temperature and high pressure sterilization
- It can be used in orthopedic implants, surgical instruments, and dentistry.
Excellent dimensional stability
- PEEK does not absorb water or moisture.
- PEEK is much more stable than nylon and POM.
- Suitable for high-precision seals, valve cores, and precision gears.
